Based on data from BP, at the end of 2009, proved gas reserves were dominated by three countries: Iran, Russia, and Qatar, which together held nearly half the world's proven reserves. Based on data from OPEC at the beginning of 2013 the highest proved oil reserves including non-conventional oil deposits are in Venezuela (20% of global reserves), Saudi Arabia (18% of global reserves), Canada (13% of global reserves), and Iran (9%). In February 2008, Venezuelan proven oil reserves were 172 billion barrels (27 × 10 ^ 9 m 3). By 2009, Venezuela reported 211.17 billion barrels (3.3573 × 10 10 m 3) of conventional oil reserves, the largest of any country in South America. Venezuela’s crude oil exports to the United States fell from 840,000 b/d in December 2015 to about 506,000 b/d in October 2018–at its peak, U.S. imports of Venezuelan crude oil averaged 1.1 million b/d in 2007. Venezuela was the third–largest supplier of crude oil imports into the United States after Canada and Saudi Arabia. Venezuela is awash with natural resources such as diamonds, bauxite, gold, iron ore, natural gas and petroleum. The GDP of the country was -$389.4 billion as of 2017. The country largely depends on oil revenues, which accounts for about 98% of the export value and around 8% of the country’s GDP value.
