1957A $1 Silver certificates are still very common to find in circulation. Notes without star serial numbers in circulated condition value around $1.50-$3 each. Notes in uncirculated condition (like new) up to $5-$6. Notes with star serial numbers in circulated condition value around $5-$8 each, while uncirculated stars to $11-$15. Since 1968, silver certificates have only been redeemable in Federal Reserve Notes and are therefore basically obsolete, though the certificates are still legal tender. Image source: Getty Images. The Federal Reserve System destroys worn currency notes at some of its various banks located throughout the country. Shredded currency is available only from certain Federal Reserve Banks. They sell it only under contract to buyers who will purchase the entire residue for at least a one year period. It is not readily available for distribution or for sale in small quantities to individuals because of operational difficulties and excessive administrative work for Federal Reserve Banks. Silver Certificates were issues of paper money that were required to be backed by an equivalent dollar amount of silver in the U.S. Treasury. Each Silver Certificate was redeemable in silver to the bearer on demand. Large-size Silver Certificates measuring 7 3/8” x 3 1/8” were issued from 1878-1923. Beginning in 1928, the size of U.S. Silver Certificates was reduced to modern standards of 6 1/8” x 2 5/8”. These notes were redeemable in silver dollars until March of 1964.
