Shale oil as an energy source

A critical measure of the viability of oil shale as an energy source lies in the ratio of the energy produced by the shale to the energy used in its mining and  The International Energy Agency recommends to use the term "light tight oil" and World Energy Resources 2013 report by the World Energy Council uses the  14 Jul 2009 Dear EarthTalk: Are the United States' vast oil shale resources a potential source of energy? -- Larry LeDoux, Honolulu, HI. 25 Feb 2013 In a world where the demands of energy has been increasing steadily; there has been multiple improvements in technology to provide us with  Oil shale extraction is also very energy-intensive, and as such is no solution to our global warming woes. Researchers have found that a gallon of shale oil can emit as much as 50 percent more carbon dioxide than a gallon of conventional oil would over its given lifecycle from extraction to tailpipe. Oil shale is one of the so-called “unconventional raw material deposits“ and will bring radical changes to the global energy market. America is already meeting a large part of its demand from unconventional sources, i.e. solid rock, which accounted for 15 per cent of the total US natural gas consumption in 2010. Shale oil refers to hydrocarbons that are trapped in formations of shale rock. Fracking is a process that oil companies use to drill down into the layers of shale and open up the rock formations Shale oil is an unconventional oil produced from oil shale rock fragments by pyrolysis, hydrogenation, or thermal dissolution. These processes convert the organic matter within the rock into synthetic oil and gas. The resulting oil can be used immediately as a fuel or upgraded to meet refinery feedstock specifications by adding hydrogen and removing impurities such as sulfur and nitrogen. The refined products can be used for the same purposes as those derived from crude oil. The term "shale oil" Oil shale gains attention as a potential abundant source of oil whenever the price of crude oil rises. At the same time, oil-shale mining and processing raise a number of environmental concerns, such as land use, waste disposal, water use, waste-water management, greenhouse-gas emissions and air pollution. Shale oil and crude oil are two types of energy sources. Of these, crude oil is well-known as the main energy source for several decades but, shale oil is considered as an emerging energy source that can be used as an alternative solution for high crude oil demand in the market.

Shale oil comprises more than a third of the onshore production of crude oil in the lower 48 states. As a result, the United States became the world’s largest crude-oil producer, according to the Energy Information Administration.

Oil shale shouldn't be confused with "shale oil," also called “tight oil,” a more commonly produced type of unconventional oil that's found trapped in limestone or sandstone rocks. Because oil shale requires mining and energy-intensive refining processes, it's a substantially dirtier energy source than conventional liquid oil. Oil shale is the rock from which shale oil is extract ed. Shale oil is similar to petroleum, and can be refined into many different substances, including diesel fuel, gasoline, and liquid petroleum gas ( LPG ). Companies can also refine shale oil to produce other commercial products, such as ammonia and sulfur. Shale oil comprises more than a third of the onshore production of crude oil in the lower 48 states. As a result, the United States became the world’s largest crude-oil producer, according to the Energy Information Administration.
