I've been restless at my job and am considering getting an MBA for upward mobility, but the price tag of most in-person programs is beyond what I can afford. I've been looking at a few online programs which seem more doable (specifically, WSU's online dual MBA/MSF program, which would take two years and cost $30-40k) Doing an online MBA now. There are some very good schools offering online MBAs now--by my count 5 of the USNWR top 25 (Kenan-Flagler, Tepper, Kelley, Marshall, WP Carey) and another 6-8 or so of the 26-50 range. It has its pros and cons. There are many well-known business schools that offer online MBAs today, exactly for people like you who cannot come to campus because you work full-time. There are quite a few online MBA degrees at professionally accredited programs that would be priced under $30K. However, MBAs are really only worth it from the top ~dozen schools as placement, brand value, and network really drop off after that. An MBA also isn't going to teach you very much in terms of hard skills if you're coming from a business undergrad or background. Because you lack the opportunity to do a summer internship that helps a person transition into a new field, it is often assumed that an online MBA isn't the ideal option for a career switcher. But Kelley is at the forefront of the schools that is changing this mindset, using one-on-one career coaching, mentorship, Looking at potentially shifting careers out of sales, but that is the only experience I have (about 8 years worth). MBA seems an appealing and somewhat simple way of gaining qualifications, but I have also heard it's a waste of money and time, and similar goals can be acquired without it. The worth of an MBA program is going to be highly dependent on what kind of job/years of experience you have and what you eventually want to do. It's really hard to switch from some careers and it's much easier to switch from others.

An Online MBA (strike 1), from a non top school (strike 2), when you already have a job in your industry (strike 3), just doesn't seem to be a good value proposition no matter how much your employer is subsidizing it. They will likely have an equally opposite bias where they believe an MBA is not worth it given they got to where they are without one. EVERYTHING GETS DILUTED OVER TIME. Just like how a dollar in the future is worth less than a dollar today, the MBA degree will probably be worth less in the future as well due to the increasing supply.
